Project Gutenberg is a really cool resource. It allows you to read books online for free. They are able to do this legally because all the books they provide have expired copywriters. Obviously they don't have the more recent books but they have many of the classics. Some books are even offered in the audio format. The down side is that you have to read them from a computer screen (which is not so great on the eyes) unless you have a
Kindle or
Nook. In my opinion a good old paper book is the best -- this site however is still worth a look.
